Although the Pima County Attorney's office recently dismissed a criminal complaint against the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce, the controversy surrounding the chamber's ads is not dead.
A separate civil complaint filed with the Scottsdale City Clerk's office still needs to be resolved.
The civil complaint was filed by the Lane for Scottsdale Committee in August, alleging the Chamber should have filed as a political action committee because the group's materials were trying to influence the outcome of the local fall election. Mayoral candidate John Washington filed a similar complaint.
The City Clerk's Office held off on examining the complaints last fall to avoid interfering with the criminal investigation. But with the decision from Pima County in hand, Scottsdale City Clerk Carolyn Jagger said this week that her office had already started working on reviewing the complaint to determine the next steps. If there is any "reasonable cause" to believe the Chamber violated campaign finance law, the clerk will send a notice to the Scottsdale City Attorney.
