Chamber offers another trip to China

The Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce is once again sponsoring a trip to China, giving locals an opportunity to build relationships with the world's largest developing country or to just see its famous sites.
In March, the Chamber led a delegation of 148 on a four-city tour of China.

"It was an incredible trip," executive director Ronee Nassi said. "Everybody had a fabulous time seeing all the sights. People are still talking about it."

Indiana Chamber study: Mid-Market firms deliver

An analysis of Indiana-headquartered, for-profit companies published today by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce shows that those with between $5 million and $100 million in annual sales -- defined as mid-market companies -- comprise only 3 percent of businesses yet generate 30 percent of the jobs and more than 40 percent of the sales.

“The impact of these mid-market firms is even more widespread than originally anticipated," said Mark Lawrance, Indiana Chamber senior vice president.

Billed as a first-of-its-kind study, the report shows excellent prospects for these companies.

In an exclusive database analysis, 3,789 such firms were found to be in place in 2006.

They employed more than 386,000 people and produced in excess of $55 billion in sales.

In addition, the top 20 percent of the mid-market companies - ranked by growth rate from 2002-2006 - experienced 53.5 percent growth compared to a 1.2 percent decline for all 121,000-plus Indiana-based, for-profit firms.

Does Your Chamber need Volunteers?

If your company, organization or project needs volunteers, and you use printed material for their recruitment, refrain from using the word “volunteer”.

The word volunteer conjures up lots of pre-conceived images and stereotypes, therefore use phrases like, “get involved”, “make a difference” or "become a change agent” instead.

This is particularly applicable to a Chamber of Commerce and other non-profit business organizations.

Albany chamber's Internet show ChamberVision debuts

The Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce's new Internet broadcasting program ChamberVision debuted yesterday with an interview with chamber President Lyn Taylor.

Taylor announced plans to retire at the end of this year.

In the interview, Taylor talks about her 17 years with the chamber and what she sees for its future.

The program, found at www.TechValleyTV.com, is a collaboration of the chamber and midhudsonmedia, based in Hudson.

The episode marked the first of what the chamber expects will be many future interviews with local business leaders, chamber spokesman John Spadafora said.

D.C. Chamber teams with Digital City Kiosks to promote local businesses

Tourism in D.C. rakes in $5.5 billion a year, and local businesses are getting help from interactive kiosks to get a taste of the booming industry.

The D.C. Chamber of Commerce paired up with Digital City Kiosks this month to publicize names and services of restaurants, hotels, retail and entertainment businesses in the area.

The interactive kiosks, provided by the Alexandria-based virtual concierge service company, are located in 10 D.C. spots that include the D.C. Visitors Center and Residence Inn Dupont Circle.

"The staff can't be everywhere at all times, so the machine is welcoming and noncommittal," said Dixie Eng, general manager at Best Western Capitol Skyline Hotel, one of the sites with the service. "Guests can walk up and play around, find things they never would have heard of before and print out something they like."

Sewickley Chamber of Commerce attracts new members

A year ago, Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce drew little interest and few members.
But in 2008, the chamber has done an about-face, collecting dues from nearly 60 businesses in Sewickley.

"It's great seeing all of the excitement for the chamber," said Phil Harris, chamber president.

Harris credited the chamber's block leader program for attracting membership.

"They've really been out there talking to other business merchants and getting a real sense of the community," Harris said. "It's a great way to keep everyone informed by just stopping in someone's store and letting them know what's going on."
The chamber's newly structured membership fees are contributing to an increase in dues, Harris said. Businesses now pay based on the number of their employees.

"Business owners who are new to the chamber have said the new structure has made it convenient for them to join," Harris said.

Other factors have played a role in the membership increase, Harris said.

"People are seeing that the chamber is involved and doing things in the community," he said. "They see action and want to be part of that.

"There's a lot more happening this year than in the past couple years, and people want to have their voices heard and be part of the solution."
